Review
Kadhalikka Neramillai is, for the most part, a rare jewel in the romance heavy breed of Tamil cinema that plays the biggest card in the market today. Directed by Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi who dares to recreate the charm of romantic dramas but we have a mature and modern take here. This movie with terrific performances by Nithya Menen and Ravi Mohan solves a balance of heart, humour and hard questions.
The story is about Siddharth who is a structural engineer with no opinion about parenthood and Shreya who is a woman wanting to adopt a child and go become a single mother with an IVF. Their lives cross, part, and reconnect over eight years and in so doing offer a nuanced exploration of love and choice, companionship. Nithya Menen brills with brilliance of Shreya with layers of depth, grace and emotions with honesty. Ravi Mohan as Sid is understated in his vulnerability which makes the character feel so beautifully complex with each passing time.

What makes this movie so resonant, and more than just a collection of Meet the Parents jokes, is how that way so fearlessly acted on the taboos around in vitro fertilization, gay parenting, sperm freezing, and childfree lifestyles without throwing anyone’s expectations into a ringer. The second half wobbles a bit (just a beat) with the ever so narrative conveniences and rushed resolution, but still, this is the vision of Kiruthiga in tact: love doesn’t have to be formulaic.
The sound track by AR Rahman is soulful and refreshing and it raises the story rather than drowns it. Gavemic U Ary’s cinematography makes Chennai and Bengaluru as much characters as any human are to which they have relevance to, rich and with a myriad of colors.

The movie creates credibility with its dedication to the story, the emotional depth, and the voice of mild criticism of the current state of relationships. It’s an assured, character-based movie that has faith in their audience. Kadhalikka Neramillai is one of the best Tamil romantic movies of recent times, if you are looking for a smart, stylish watch and that is also sensitive. It’s not perfect but its imperfections make it only the more human and relatable.
Cast
The emotional heart of Kadhalikka Neramillai comes by way of the performances of the likes of Ravi Mohan and Nithya Menen, who are convincing, earthy presences to be sure. Ravi Mohan is Siddharth “Sid,” a demure structural engineer who works hard with his fears of parenthood and community standards. He’s especially good about the sense of emotional restraint, the feeling of slow evolution along, playing a man learning how to love again. Nithya Menen’s Shriya is easily the heart of the movie, fiery, compassionate and unapologetically ego-centric. The more difficult space, of Nithya as the co-parenting woman throughout Icelandic Space Vf through IVF, provides the progressive heart of this movie with the aid of her expressionistic usage in performance.
Yogi Babu (Gowda) and Vinay Rai (Sethu) add comic relief and insightful truth speaking, especially in a memorable sperm-freezing scene about which Vinay Rai says, under the spirit of infertility, there are other ways of parenting. T. J. Bhanu, as Nirupama, introduces an endearing new layer of vulnerability, we are given the portrait of a woman moving between love and ideology. Karan, the unfaithful half of the couple, played by John Kokken, is able to credibly conjure up the emotional course of the movie.
Relying on veterans like Lal (Sid’s father), Lakshmy Ramakrishnan and Vinodhini Vaidyanathan only increases the ante of this family dynamic away from being dry goods but giving it emotional authenticity. Rohaan Singh as Parthiv as the fulfilment of Shriya’s choice in the form of a child, who adds a touch of innocence and an element of chaos to the plot in the second half of the story. The ensemble well balanced with all the cast members like RJ Saru, Raj Ayyappa and Prem, Kadhalikka Neramillai is a very relatable, heartfelt journey, exploring the theme of love, freedom and second chances.
Critical Reviews
Janani K of India Today awarded Kadhalikka Neramillai two and a half stars out of five and described the movie as a much-needed relief from action movies, calling the performances of Nithya Menen and Ravi Mohan to the tag. It passes through the gates of single parenting and gay parenting, but never sustains the surface area for too long, nor is it averse to tropes that are not usually considered problematic. Repeatable sounds and good expressive music by AR Rahman serve to enhance the cinema, but the paper-thin story results in this being not much more than an enjoyable if bloodless love story.

In another review for Cinema Express, Narayani M rated the movie three out of five stars and praised the movie for its romance and Shriya’s singlehanded journey to motherhood, while criticizing the movie for stacking eighth-grade sensitivity on its blurred interpretation of the serious themes. Four combination of upbeat music by AR Rahman and powerful performances makes it worth a watch despite the gaddha and subplots, and the rudeness of their jokes about body shaming adds to the average experience. This is fresh and relatable, but is not designed for readers who like a deeper, more philosophical message.
Reviewing the movie for the Times of India, a critic awarded three out of five, highlighting the film’s creative approach to young love and themes of modern-day relationships; however, it felt that there are contradictions in a progressive approach: Even with a thin plotline that is quick in execution, a lot of backfilled area is dispersed in strong performances, colorful characters and colorful cinematography. The writing (by Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi) is sketchy, but bold and engaging.
Speaking about Kadhalikka Neramillai, Avinash Ramachandran, the film critic of Indian Express rated the movie as three and a half out of five stars and described Kadhalikka Neramillai as a seminal Tamil Rom-com, with maturity and unimpeded modern day mundane urban setting. The film’s revelry is beamed by first-rate Nithya Menen as the somewhat tiresome Shriya (though these go-far-n-nowhere-quotidians can be directly attributed to writer Ravi Mohan) and Siddharth, charming and amiable, but feeling underwritten. Despite heavy cliche buzzwords and good performances, it’s a tad gripping thanks to the music by AR Rahman and vibrant cinematography, and narrates the story in a feel-good way too, like almost everything these days.
Audiences Reviews
The overall public opinion was quite positive for their casting choices in this venture as it garnered 6.2 stars out of 10 on IMDb from 1.8k critics and moviegoers, which are incredibly decent ratings for a Tamil movie. After checking out several reviews from users, Kadhalikka Neramillai showed an outcome of criticism, though largely a positive response from audiences than an adverse one, especially to the younger content audience and aficionades of urban relationship movies.
Most viewers complimented the movie for its realistic representation of modern romance, parenting, and gender expectations. Nithya Menen was one of the most applauded characters of the show for her engaging and earthy performance as Shriya, a strong and independent woman who resorts to single motherhood by going through IVF. Also, Jayam Ravi for his restrained and mature performance as Siddharth, breaking away from image of mass hero Vinay Rai and Yogi Babu provided genuine comic relief, and one missed them in the more formulaic second half of the movie.

Among them, one person produced a lot of reverb, if not more than one, was the music of A.R. Rahman, “Yennai Izhukkuthadi” and “Lavender Neramae,” which enhanced many, many moments of emotion, to the point that the entire story was riveting.
The only substantial allegations were suggested by the watchers for the fact that the second half of the movie is draggy, and that some of the transitions in the storyline, particularly with regards to the character of Siddharth changing his mind are poorly done. Some of the critics criticized the screenplay as being clichéd and pedantic and a few accused it of being hypocritical in breaking stereotypes only to have a stereotyped conclusion to the tale.
Overall Kadhalikka Neramillai is inserted as a much needed, feel-good rom com with progressive ideals, beautiful aesthetics and performs in a way (which is good) that even if someone talks about it, we are better off from it than from the unpleasant realities of life.
Songs
Kadhalika Neramillai is wildly genre-defying for a track that has a colourful soundtrack of romance, heartbreak and youth exuberance.
The album begins with “Yennai Izhukkuthadi” which is a soul song performed by A. R. Rahman and Dhee, lyrics by Vivek. The song’s rich orchestration and tender lead vocals build an emotional song, a highlight as an introductory track. “Lavender Neramae,” Adithya RK and Alexandra Joy, verges towards a languidly romantic style with an easily accessible modern twist. Written by Mashook Rahman, it’s a vaguely sticky tune and the sounds stick in your head.
Then, there’s, its a Break Up Da, a fun melodic tear-sodden break up piece with Shruti Haasan and Adithya RK. Snehan’s lyrics have a mixture of cheeky tone combined with vulnerability, which makes the lyrics have a very relatable message for young hearts. The fourth track is the oddball and international “Muevelo.” After songs with upbeat vibe, this song is rhythmic with the voices of A. R. Ameen and Shuba and lyrics Vivek and Thoughtsfornow which gives it a regal touch to it.

Last on the album, “Baby Chiki Chiki“, sung by Shreya Ghoshal and written by Krithika Nelson, summs up the album in a light pop-like territory balancing an element of fun but with pop sensibilities. All the five tracks are a little over 19 minutes in duration, one kind of a kaleidoscopic journey of music befitting of the varied tones of Kadhalikka Neramillai.
